Appraisal Tools, Tutorials and Patient Decision Aids

 

  • Agency for Healthcare Quality (AHRQ)  -  Patient Safety and Quality: An Evidence-Based Handbook for Nurses

    • "Nurses play a vital role in improving the safety and quality of patient care - not only in the hospital or ambulatory treatment facility, but also of community-based care and the care performed by family members. Nurses need to know what proven techniques and interventions they can use to enhance patient outcomes.  TO address this need, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), with additional funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has prepared this comprehensive, 1,400 - page, handbook for nurses on patient safety and quality - Patient Safety and Quality: An Evidence-Based Handbook for Nurses. (AHRQ Publication No. 08-0043).  Experts in the field reviewed the literature, and their contributions are grouped into these sections: Patient Safety and Quality / Evidence-based Practice / Patient-centered Care / Working Conditions - Work Environment / Critical Opportunities for Patient Safety and Quality / Tools." 

  • AHRQ's Effective Healthcare Program

    • Understand more about this comprehensive set of programs and networks with the aim to generate research, translate, disseminate and implement findings to advance patient outcomes.

  • AHRQ's DEcIDE Network

    • Part of the US's "Effectiveness Research Program," this network (Developing Evidence to Inform Decision about Effectiveness) is a collaborative effort amongst research centers.  The network conducts primary research on "outcomes, effectiveness, safety and usefulness of medical treatments and services."

  • Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE)

    • Provides access to instruments that can be used to appraise clinical guidelines.  The latest instruments, the AGREE II Training Tools, can be found linked here.

  • Center for Evidence Based Medicine

    • Provides access to helpful critical appraisal tools.

  • Centre for Health Evidence

    • Provides access to helpful "How to Use a Clinical Practice Guideline" document.

  • Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP)

    • Screening questions / checklists developed to help critically appraise resources.

  • Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology

    • ​This full-text journal, published by the University of Chicago Press, provides access to Volume 29, No. S1, from October 28, 2008, titled A Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals. The full-text article provides key strategies to address prevention of HAC.

  • Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI)

    • Membership is necessary for most access.

  • Ottawa Hospital Research Institute Patient Decision Aids Implementation Toolkit

    • This comprehensive site provides lists of and links to a wealth of resources to help "Identify the Decision, Find Patient Decision Aids, Identify Barriers and Explore Ways to Overcome Them, Implement Decision Aids/Decision Support with Training and Monitoring Use and Outcomes."

  • Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)

    • This institute funds research that "provides patients, their caregivers and clinicians with the evidence-based information needed to make better-informed health care decisions."

  • University of Nottingham

    • The University provides links to Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) and tutorials that can help others learn about evidence-based practice.

  • University of Washington - Evidence Based Practice Research Guide

    • This guide developed by librarians at the University of Washington provides links to useful EBP resources.
